FAQs

Q
Where does the data on the IMP come from?

A
The IMP displays data on firms active in developing countries. The data comes from surveys at national or international level. The IMP can host various data sources in parallel, be it multi-country sample surveys, or census data from a particular country

Q
Why was IMP created?

A
The Investment Monitoring Platform brings together a wider group of different stakeholders in the development process (various government agencies, the private sector, researchers, and international organizations), thus creating the foundation for sharing and discussing investment related information and empirical data to build global knowledge networks

Q
Who operates the IMP today?

A
The IMP is a joint undertaking by AfrIPANet and UNIDO. IMP operational tasks are split between national IPAs and UNIDO. The IMP is hosted and maintained by UNIDO on a UNIDO server located at headquarters in Vienna, Austria. Much of the content is created by IPAs and researchers

Q
Who can register to the IMP?

A
In the Pilot Phase, IMP usage is by invitation only. In this phase, UNIDO and AfrIPANet train key users in the participating countries, and involve them in workshops. This way, users provide the developers with feedback on usage experience that is systematically reviewed, structured, converted into requirements specifications, and used to develop the IMP further.
After the Pilot Phase, access will be opened to the surveyed companies who are displayed in the Business Directory. They thus can update their records and even build a web-profile to present their products and services in a specialized webtool called BNet.
In the subsequent phase, firms that have not been surveyed will be invited to join IMP. They will be asked to fill in the investor survey questionnaire and then can create their profile in UNIDO’s BNet in order to be visible on the web.

Q
What is the Registration process?

A
Currently registration works by invitation. Once you have received the invitation, just follow the directions given in the invitation email.
1. You click on the link sent in the email, will be routed to a web-template to enter your contact details.
2. Upon saving these data, a confirmation message is sent to your email account.
3. In the confirmation email you receive another link and an access code. Click the hyperlink, and on the page that appears, click “confirm” to finalize the registration process

Q
Is there a cost to registering on the IMP?

A
No. The IMP is free of charge for all users. This will not change in the future.

Q
What is the level of data confidentiality?

A
After collection of the data, the questionnaire is stripped into two parts. Fields identifying the company are stored only in the Business Directory exactly to the extent that the surveyed company agreed to be visible. The other data fields are stored in the IMP research database, which can be queried through the graphical user interface. Compliant with European Union data protection requirements, any graphical object that contains less than 3 surveyed companies is not displayed – this prevents users who know one company inside-out from being able to calculate the residual values of another company displayed in a set of two companies.

Q
How many companies aretypically contained in the Survey Groups visible on the IMP?

A
Surveys vary in terms of size. The Africa Investor Survey 2010 covered ca. 7000 firms. A national survey can cover only about 1000. IMP can deal with small and large surveys, but the smaller the number of firms the more likely it is that several data filters and drill-downs will result in a very small number of observations.

Q
What was the methodology applied for the survey and what is the QA to the process in generating Public Data?

A
The quality management process covers documentation and training of country team leaders and enumerators before data collection, data review processes during data collection, data validation procedures after the collection, and algorithm based data plausibilization before import into the IMP database.

Q
When did the IMP go live?

A
The tool was launched in Xiamen, China on September 8, 2011, at the meeting of the AfrIPAnet delegates at the Xiamen Summit Meeting.

Q
Are there IMP Training Packages?

A
Currently we have an IMP Tour to familiarize new users with the platform. Soon a set of training videos will be ready to help users completely new to IMP.

Q
Do the Investment Promotion Agencies have IMP operators?

A
Yes, IPAs initialized in the IMP havestaff monitoring and answering requestsby investors. They receive training and are handing-on knowledge about IMP usage, request handling, and analysis.

Q
What do I need for this system to operate it?

A
The IMP runs on a server accessible through the internet. Most browsers like Internet Explorer, Firefox, Safari, Chrome provide all the features necessary to operate the IMP. Ideally the internet connection should not be lower than 512 kilobits per second.

Q
Will there be new versions?

A
All versioning of the IMP will be managed on the side of UNIDO and the data providers. Compatibility with browser versions is ensured by the IMP developers.

Q
What tool does this compare with?

A
The IMP comprises features which do not yet exist in other tools. It combines functionalities as used in professional networking platforms (e.g. LinkedIn) and interactive public data visualization (e.g. Gapminder).

Q
What information is available in the Business Directory?

A
The IMP’s business directory displays those details that the surveyed firms want to be displayed. Generally this comprises contact details, general company information, product information, a contact person and some basic operational details such as turnover and number of employees.

Q
Who updates the Business Directory?

A
The listed companies update their own records.UNIDO’s BNet – an extended version of the business directory – is a vehicle to advertise a company. Once a year each company listed on the IMP is asked to update and confirm their profile. Outdated information will prevent the listed company from being found on the IMP … for the right reasons.

Q
Is there validation of the Business Directory information?

A
Companies have to submit a survey questionnaire to be visible on the IMP, and to update their profile annually. Most of the companies visible have actually been visited on-site by an enumerator.

Q
Is there a license fee for the software?

A
No. The IMP is free of charge for all users. Its purpose is to spread knowledge about doing business in emerging economies. There is no registration fees, no license fees, no download or upload fees, it’s cost free.

Q
How does the IMP integrate with applications used in IPAs?

A
The IMP typically neither replaces existing communication nor customer relationship management tools used in IPAs. It features functionalities that permit posting documents and replying to information requests channeled through the IMP.
If an IPA does not use any other tools yet, IMP is able to emulate the functions of a CRM tool in a user friendly way. An IPA can use the IMP’s business directory as an investors directory, manage inquiries by investors though the IMP’s IPA dashboard, do analysis, generate reports, and publish news, sector profiles and research findings on the IMP.

Q
How does continuous data collection take place?

A
In order to ensure sustainability and quality assurance of data collection, a complementary survey tool (SANG) is currently being developed by UNIDO. SANG provides the framework for experts to design surveys, deploy them to the field, where data will be captured and efficiently uploaded into a central database, making it available for analysis. SANG is the key tool for survey management, integrating questionnaire design, data capturing and validation methodology and work flow management of enumerator and validator teams, which is the quickest way to interactive data dissemination on the IMP Data Visualization Engine, thus covering the entire "Survey Lifecycle".
